Coal is a rock made of almost pure carbon. The coal in different deposits have different compositions, therefore, coal is classified in various categories. Sub-bituminous coal or black lignite is a category of coal which appears as grey-black or dark brown. It ranges from hard to soft as it represents an intermediate stage between low quality lignite and higher quality bituminous coal.

Sub-bituminous coal is a type of lower grade coal which contains 35%-45% carbon. The properties of this type are between those of lignite, the lowest grade coal, and those of bituminous coal, the second highest grade of coal. Sub-bituminous coal is primarily used as a fuel for steam-electric power generation. Sub-bituminous coals are the second division of low-rank coals.

Coals are classified by rank according to their progressive alteration in the natural metamorphosis from lignite to anthracite. Subbituminous coal typically contains 35%–45% carbon, compared with 25%–35% for lignite. About 44% of the coal produced in the United States in 2019 was subbituminous. Bituminous coal contains 45%–86% carbon and has two to three times the heating value of lignite. Bituminous coal was formed under high heat and pressure. 10200225 External Combustion Boilers Industrial Bituminous/Subbituminous Coal Traveling Grate (Overfeed) Stoker (Subbituminous Coal) 10200226 External Combustion Boilers Industrial Bituminous/Subbituminous Coal Pulverized Coal: Dry Bottom Tangential (Subbituminous Coal) Nov 24, 2020 · Coal types included lignite (Texas), subbituminous (Powder River Basin), and bituminous (Illinois #6).
